cultural autism
February 19th, 2009Culture is obsessed by culture. We are constantly bombarded with instructions and definitions of cultural trends, such as what is ‘PC’ and what is not, what the buzz word of the moment might be, (whatever happened to our ‘carbon footprint’ in order to make it give way to our morning bowl of ‘credit crunch’?), cultural theory, consequential culture that causes us to adapt our morals and our roots and various other circumstantial anomalies that appear to shake our foundations and direct our paths.
Having studied this recently and also following an interesting cluster email discussion about ‘cultural instructions for the consumption of red meat in the Bible’ (or something like that?! You had to be there I guess for that to make any sense!), I began to think about roots. How easily can we forget our roots and be swayed by the latest cultural fad? I know that I can do this sometimes without even noticing. What is the basis for our morality? Is it what emotional? Is it culturally acceptable? Or is it biblical? I’d love to say that mine was biblical, but I am not sure I could put my hand on my heart and say that I am not persuaded by the ‘wise words of man’ as opposed to God’s truth.
So I am perhaps suffering from a bit of ‘cultural autsim’ at the moment… God’s truth seems to have been so far removed from society as a whole that it is difficult not to fall into this trap. The answer? I am not really sure, but I think I might start with one of the gospels and see what Jesus himself has to say on the matter!!
